Sphere Resources is a manufacturing and procurement partner built for custom product companies. If you sell teamwear, branded merchandise, promotional products, or any kind of brandable item, we work directly with factories in China and Southeast Asia to develop and deliver what your clients ask for.
Sam Clay moved to China in 2006 as an on-the-ground trade agent for an Australian brand. Sitting between western clients and Chinese factories every day, he kept seeing the same gap. Companies knew what they wanted and expected, but had no reliable way to convey that to manufacturers. And factories had no reliable way to understand it.
In 2009, Sam founded Sphere Resources in Dongguan to be that bridge. To handle the Chinese side of the operation, he brought in Christina Wong as co-founder — her language skills and manufacturing relationships filling the gap Sam couldn’t on his own.
The early days were humble. Working out of a tiny office, they hustled through their first orders however they could. Sam even helped manually unload a shipping container full of surfboards for one of their first full client orders. From that start, they built the business slowly and steadily into what it is today — still driven by the same idea that got it started.
The manufacturing landscape across China and Southeast Asia looks very different from what it did in 2009. Capabilities are broader, quality standards are higher, and access to production has opened up significantly. A lot has genuinely improved.

Around 2015, we started directing more of our focus toward custom branded products.
We kept seeing the same patterns — mistakes, miscommunications, and operational complexity creating real problems for clients. This was where the gap between western expectations and eastern production realities was widest. And where we knew we could add the most value.
General sourcing is still part of what we do, but custom branded products are our focus. It’s where we’ve built the deepest experience, and where you’ll get the most out of working with us.
Our team is based in Dongguan, in the heart of South China’s manufacturing region. That location matters. It means we can be at your factory within an hour when something needs attention, not next week when someone flies in.
Day to day, your project is being managed by people who meet directly with factories, inspect samples before they ship, and audit production capabilities before we commit.
Director
Sam moved to China in 2006 after finishing his degree in International Trade and Finance at the Victorian University of Technology in Australia. He founded Sphere Resources with Christina in 2009.
Today, Sam stays close to the larger and more complex client accounts where strategy, long-term planning, and problem-solving matter most. The rest of his time goes into building the company's operational capabilities, including the systems, technology, training, and supplier relationships that affect the quality of your projects over time.
He's more of an advisor than a salesperson. If your project has a smarter way to come together, you'll hear about it from him directly, even if it means a smaller order.
Christina is from Heyuan, Guangdong, about two hours from our Dongguan office. She studied International Trade at Changsha Foreign Language University and speaks four languages, which makes a real difference when coordinating between western clients and Chinese factories.
Christina runs the day-to-day operations of the China team. She's built most of the supplier relationships the business depends on, and a large part of our operational knowledge runs through her or someone she trained.
A few standards we hold even when it costs us a deal
If a job needs three weeks and the factory says two, we'll tell you three. We'd rather lose the order than overpromise and miss your client's deadline.
Bulk production without a confirmed sample creates risk for everyone. We won't skip it to move faster.
If your brief fits a supplier we don't currently work with, we'll find them and vet them.
If your spec, timeline, or budget won't deliver what you're hoping for, you'll hear it from us early — before you've already sold it to your client.
Sphere Resources works best for companies who sell custom products as a core part of their business. That includes teamwear and custom apparel brands, merchandise suppliers, marketing agencies, and giveaway distributors.
The strongest relationships we have share a few things in common. Those clients value reliability over the lowest unit price. They have ongoing demand, not just one-off orders.
We’re not the right fit for buyers who shop purely on price or expect instant quoting on highly customized work. Custom product supply takes development, refinement, and real coordination. When both sides treat it that way, the results are better for everyone.
Sphere Resources sits inside a group of companies built specifically for custom product businesses — all co-founded by Sam Clay.

The sourcing and trade services arm of the group. Product development, supplier coordination, trade services, and complex custom briefs across any category — for everything that can't be manufactured in-house, this is where it gets handled.

Our manufacturing arm, running an in-house factory producing high-quality teamwear and bespoke garments. Actively expanding into promotional and non-apparel products — giving you access to more categories at lower minimums and with greater customization than a typical supplier can offer.

Our sister company on the software and marketing side. They're building a platform purpose-built for custom product companies — easy ordering, product development, free design access, and custom customer shops — alongside marketing, design, and web services.
If you sell custom products and you’re tired of managing the complexity alone, we’d like to hear what you’re working on. Send us your brief, your product idea, or just a rough direction. We’ll take it from there.
